Taking Your Small Business Product Online

So you own a small business, or you are in charge of marketing for your small business, and you want to sell your company's products on the Internet. That is a wise decision, because there is no more powerful promotional and communication vehicle for small business than the Internet. You can use this awesome potential to greatly expand your reach and increase your sales, and perhaps your small business will become a large business. If the customers are out there, the web gives the small business owner the tools to go out and get them.

But in spite of all the potential, online success for business -- small or large -- is not easy. The web is strewn with millions of websites that lie silent, unvisited, unproductive. And the chances are yours will be one of them. Even if your small business is wildly successful in the offline world, there is no guarantee your online efforts will be successful.

The good news is there is a way to avoid online mediocrity. If you follow the path trod by virtually everyone who has been successful online, there is a very good chance you will be successful too.

The path to online success comes down to this...

- Understand a few important online marketing principles.

- Learn a number of key strategies for success.

- Apply these strategies to your own situation, to create an effective program.

- Be persistent and work at it. Take the long term approach.

This last point is probably the most important. You absolutely must be persistent. You must religiously apply your program. You must test it, modify it, test it again. You must keep plugging away at the program. Results will not happen overnight; but they will happen. If there is one message common to all online marketers it is this: patience, perseverance and persistence will ultimately make you a winner. You must Stick with the Program.

Reaching People on the Internet

If there is one seriously misleading myth believed by many novice web marketers it is the tired cliche that says "If you build it they will come." When it comes to web sites, nothing could be further from the truth. People have built literally millions of websites to which virtually NOBODY ever comes. They built it, and nobody came.

Having a website is NOT like having an office or store on Main Street. People can drive by your store and see it. It is just there, in their face. But unless people specifically come to your small business website, it is invisible. There is virtually zero chance that people "driving by" your site will drop in and say "Hi". They will not even know you exist.

What this means is that you must do much more than create a website. You must create an online presence. In fact, most internet marketing articles and manuals -- including this one -- are devoted to explaining the importance of developing an "online presence", and describing how you go about creating and maintaining one.

You must have the right product

As obvious as it might sound, before you start worrying about creating an online presence, you absolutely must have a product you can sell online. Virtually everything else about online sales is open for discussion, but the one thing that is not is this...

You must have a PRODUCT. Even if you already have a successful offline business, taking that product or service online is NOT a slam dunk.

In fact, many locally-oriented small businesses provide services that cannot be sold online. One reason is that they cannot be delivered "at a distance". Take, for instance, the pizza restaurant, the hair dresser, the dentist, the swimming pool cleaning company, etc.

So your first job is to evaluate your product(s), and come to some conclusions about what it will take to make them "internet ready".
